16 Dan's Friday Filmmaking Creative Tips & Wonders

In this weeks blog, we delve into the upcoming Generative AI tools set to revolutionise Adobe Premiere Pro, offering users enhanced creativity and expanded video editing possibilities. Following that, we explore the mesmerising cinematography of ‘Oppenheimer,’ as Christopher Nolan and Hoyte van Hoytema offer insights into their decision-making process behind the film’s visual elements, including their choice to utilise IMAX 65mm. To conclude, we celebrate the illustrious career of one of cinema’s finest, Robert De Niro, by ranking his top 10 greatest films of all time.

Generative AI Tools Coming to Adobe Premiere Pro

In collaboration with ‘Open AI’, ‘Runway’ and ‘Pika Labs’, Adobe is combining its new ‘Firefly’ AI editing software with the latest market leading AI technology to enhance your video editing and post production capabilities! In a new version of Premiere Pro, users will be able to use powerful generative fill AI tools for a variety of different uses including; Adding or changing objects within your footage using text based prompts, removing unwanted items from the footage with the magic eraser tool and extending footage using ‘Generative Extend’ to add frames to your footage ensuring you have the correct duration of shot you require.

Adobe is also empowering its users with the flexibility to integrate third-party systems into their workflows, with OpenAI’s SORA among the options. This feature enables users to incorporate desired b-roll seamlessly into scenes through text-based prompts. This revolutionary AI technology is poised to invigorate video projects, sparking excitement among users and industry professionals alike for the limitless possibilities it offers in shaping the future of video editing!

The Cinematography of Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer signifies the fourth collaboration between writer/director Christopher Nolan and Dutch cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, following their work on ‘Interstellar’, ‘Dunkirk’, and ‘Tenet’. Spanning three hours, this epic film delves into the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, portrayed by Cillian Murphy, famously known as the ‘Father of the atomic bomb.’ Nolan opted for authentic locations, including the Los Alamos facility, pivotal to the Manhattan Project, and the Trinity Test site. Filming was executed in Nolan’s preferred IMAX format, alongside Panavision 65mm cameras akin to those favoured by David Lean for ‘Lawrence Of Arabia.’ The film’s cinematography embraces both colour and black-and-white with the 65mm film close to 18k in resolution, leading to the development of the new film stock.

Nolan artfully divided the narrative into two stylistic strands: ‘Fission’ (colour), immersing the audience into Oppenheimer’s psyche during his formative years and tenure on the Manhattan Project, and ‘Fusion’ (black-and-white), offering a more detached perspective, particularly focusing on Lewis Strauss, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr, who is eventually revealed, was the driving force behind Oppenheimer’s security clearance being revoked in 1954.Many would argue that this was Christopher Nolan’s most ambitious and best film to date and having cleaned up at the recent 2024 academy awards, including Hoyte van Hoytema winning best cinematography, it is hard not to appreciate the spectacle and art of this epic film.

Below in a video posted by Universal Pictures, Hoyte van Hoytema and Christopher Nolan shed light on the thought processes behind some of the cinematography decisions taken on the film, explaining why they decided to shoot on IMAX 65mm film stock, whilst also showcasing the stunning photography of the film!
