Faculty-level Student Recruitment Videos

Client: University of Leeds
Project: Faculty of Social Sciences

In partnership with the University of Leeds, we were tasked with creating four bespoke videos tailored towards the Faculty of Social Sciences student recruitment efforts. The four videos were categorised into two groups, one group aimed towards school leavers, and the other towards potential postgraduate applicants. The task for the school-specific videos was to artfully convey the course’s benefits, showcase its contemporary relevance and highlight its role in shaping students’ future careers. The post-graduate videos had to clearly communicate the key themes of each course, underscore their societal impact and illustrate how they might pave the way for successful future careers.

In terms of our creative approach, we wanted to harness the authenticity and relatability of real students and academics, so we directed our interviewees to be more succinct, with soundbites that would generate real impact. Our students addressed the audience by speaking directly to the camera, and we complimented this with dynamic subject and camera movement, to enhance the video’s pace and the audience’s engagement.

For our pre-production process, we started with preliminary online video calls with all our contributors and conducted a thorough survey of the University’s premises to select ideal filming locations and maximise our filming efficiency. A creative treatment and script were sent to the client to ensure the key themes/objectives were being met and we were all on the same page before any filming began. The filming phase spanned three days, during which we captured all interviews and b-roll footage. Adhering to a tight schedule, it was important that our time management and organisational skills were on point to ensure we remained on track and secured all the necessary shots we needed.

During the post-production phase, we built our edits from a series of compelling contributor soundbites, ensuring that each hit the client’s brief and key themes. After a thorough amendment and feedback cycle, we agreed on the narrative and were then able to use our b-roll cutaways to add depth and context, employing techniques such as slow-motion, time-lapse, and gimbal work to craft seamless, captivating sequences that complemented the interview segments. The final result was four polished and impactful videos (plus the social media edits) that effectively engaged with prospective students and communicated the Faculty of Social Sciences department’s collaborative ethos, its unique offerings and the fantastic opportunities available for its students.
